i have some piping in my model and they are connected to a mechanical unit - i am using hydronic supply and hydronic return - i have set the material to just be a color per system - i wanted to disconnect some piping off the supply and then reconnect to return - but on the pipes i am trying to reconnect to the supply system will not let me change the system type to reurn and does not change when i connect the piping to the return system - it remains having a supply system type and will not give me the drop down to change system type - yet in the same model i can choose another pipe in the model and look at the system type and the drop down has all the choices - but on the pipes i am working with they will not allow me to change the system type - it only has one option under the system type drop down

I'm guessing you are using Revit MEP 2012? If so, make sure you have the latest updates by clicking on the little "satellite receiver dish" at the top right of the Revit interface. It should say "Your product is up to date" towards the bottom of that list. If it's not up to date it will tell you.
What you are describing should work in 2012 as far as I can tell, so this may be a bug. -
It is 2012, because previous to this version we could not assign a material to a system.
Issue #1
As long as the system classifications match (pipe vs. connector) than there is no problem. Just select 1 piece of the pipe circuit (not fittings) and change the pipe type.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. If you select fittings along with the pipe then it will be greyed out as shopjoes originally described. To accelerate your workflow, you can select the entire length of pipe along with fittings and then use the filter command to select only the pipes.Originally posted by Jrobker View PostComment

well thanks for the response - i am using 2012 mep - the pipe i am referring to was originally connected to my mechanical equipment to the hydronic supply - but i have since disconnected pipe run from original mechanical equipment which just left a pipe run in space which i thought i would be able to just change it to hydronic return - no problem right - no it only has the option to have a hydronic supply designation. i think it has to do with the pipe accessories being originally attached to hydronic supply. i just did want to have to remodel a whole pipe run to just change the system designation - i will look into this further tonight - thanks for the responseComment

We've had the same issues as well. So far we haven't been able to come up with a way to fix it other than to remodel the pipe, which is the last thing I want to do. Not very efficient. One method that worked for awhile was to remove the pipe from the system, or delete the system from the system browser. Now this only seems to make things worse as the pipe system type is changed to "undefined" and still can't change type.Comment

Like bblack says, I found this is the only way. Eliminate the system and then create a new pipe in with the system you want and trim it to the unassigned ones.Comment

So anything drawn fitting to fitting pretty much has to be scrapped.Comment

If your talking about type, than yes, pre- 2014. Ver. 14 on we can re-assign type to the entire pipe system. This changes the fittings to the assigned ones of the new type and pipe between fittings.Originally posted by mdomer View Post

Thanks Jrobker for the concise summary. I am using Revit 2019 and am running into the same problem. Does anyone know of way to change the pipe system other than manually disconnecting every single fitting from a piping run, somehow selecting all the straight runs of piping and then changing the system?Comment
