    Copying dimensions on typical floors

    Hello,

I am working on multistory building with repetitive typical floor. When I try to copy dimensions from one typical floor to the next half of them loose reference. I am certain that the references are exactly in the same place because they are repetitive model group as well. I placed the dimensions in a detail group but when I apply it the same half of them disappear. I cannot explain it as Revit allows me to group the dimensions but they loose reference when I apply them to the model group instances ?!

One other question I have is does it make sense to add small model line segments to model groups as references for dimensions in an attached detail group. Example: "windows model group" with attached "structural openings detail group" and model line segments in the model group to serve as references for wall ends (walls are not part of the model group). I don't know if this is a good practice but I would like to apply detail groups with references outside of the model group.
Thank you for your help- advice!

    BR, Vangel.

Have you tried attaching the detail group to the model group on each floor instead of copying?

Thank you for your reply! I have tried to both copy the dimensions and attach them as reference. Neither way works. Sometimes they copy sometimes they don't. I cannot explain what causes this and how am I the only person running into this. Please advice if you have experience with this issue.

You may experience different results depending on how you model, exactly what you are referencing and how you are copy/pasting. Paste aligned to same place or paste aligned to current view? Walls spanning multiple levels or a single one on each level?
There are no stupid questions, only stupid people

          Hi Elton,
the referenced model elements are repeated on each floor but they belong to the same model group. I use paste aligned to current view when I try to paste the dimensions or just attach a dimensions detail group to the the model group. In both cases some of the dimensions cannot find reference. See linked file. Thanks for your help!

the problem you are having, is that the "witness" lines in revit are actually attached to the element, so if the element in question is not present, then your witness lines have Nothing to connect to.

The plus side to this kind of connection is that changes in wall thickness for example are automatically altered in your dimsensions, a downside is, you can't copy/paste dimensions...you will have to dimension things each time unless it is an element that spans multiple levels.

But if there is identical element on each floor the dimensions will sometimes pick it up and sometimes will not.
This still doesn't explain why on earth detail group with dimensions will loose some dimensions when attached to identical model group instances (see link to example file from above).
