Cannot use paint tool on some families

    Hey,

I have trouble using the paint door on particular families. I know that we can embed paint in the family and then tie that to a parameter but often times that's not really helpful.

I found this in the helpdesk but cannot figure out if it applies and a lot of families will not react to the join tool so it's not very helpful.

Anyone has any ideas on how to fix this?

You dont *fix it.* If you want to paint families, you have to do it in the Family Editor.

EDIT: Also, only certain categories can Join Geometry. So if there is something you want to join to other families, you might have to make it a Generic Model...

There is actually a logged issue with some family instances not being able to be painted. I suspect this is what you are running up against. The development team is looking at how paint is applied to elements in a project to correct this issue.

          Hey JeffH,

It looks like it's only certain families that give problems. Let me know if you need a stripped down example file. Also, I have noticed that some families only give problems some of the time: most of the time you will be able to paint their faces but for some instances, it won't work.

It would be great if the factory was able to address this. We've seen the paint tool getting a lot more use now that our BIM models serve as the base model for 3ds max/live/enscape walkthroughs etc.

Thanks, I don't think we need examples. The issue has been around for some time and understood. Finding the solution on the other hand is not so easy. Some work needs to be done to the underlying software architecture of materials in order to resolve the problem.
