Can A Filled Region Have A Material?

The title speaks for itself. Is it possible to have material assigned to a filled region. The reason I ask this is for different displays in Hidden, Shaded and Textured views. Seems to me it is not possible but then there are some smart guys out there who might know how to achieve this.

What are you trying to achieve with a material on a filled region? Is it supposed to represent an actual element of the building? Knowing what you're aiming for might help to give you a solution.

Yes, representing a 3D element that I don't want (rightly or wrongly) to put in the model. In this case, it is post. I create my timber work in Sketchup and import via ifc. This works quite nicely. Before I get to that point I need the post locations shown on the floor plans. There are a number of ways to do this - 1) Insert an actual 3d post and hide it or delete it when I bring in the SU ifc, or 2) Use a detail item which is what I do now. I typically work in hidden view and if I need coloured/textured things for presentation, I go to Sketchup. I am looking at doing all my presentation stuff in Revit and so am exploring different ways to do this.

These 2 concepts are not compatible in the direction you are trying to make them compatible. Fill Patterns can be used inside materials (you have an optional surface pattern and cut pattern). At a very basic level, make sure the Filled Region uses the same pattern and color as the cut fill pattern of your material (you said plan, so I'm assuming things are cut).

Next option would be to do #1 as you suggested above; I would consider this the "standard" approach. Otherwise the workarounds continue to get so complicated you might as well use the correct object in the first place.
