Playing with keynotes for the first time and would like to do them "by sheet". For some reason the description in the first line item, key note 1, is coming up blank.

What could be causing that?
Did you inadvertently use an element keynote for the first one instead of a user keynote and it's reading an empty keynote parameter in the element you tagged?
Update:
After getting all my key note symbols in, when changing to "by sheet", none of the descriptions show. The key note numbers show correctly.
I replaced the file with a pared down version of one of the OOTB files and it behaved the same way. So, the problem is not in the key note file. I'm thinking I did something wrong in the model as I was experimenting. I don't think it was a user keynote (unless someone can prove otherwise), because, as far as I can tell, it does not change any of the element properties. The only link is with the legend table.
Could I have created some sort of "orphaned" data as I was experimenting?
When you say 'Keynotes By Sheet' - are you selecting the By Sheet option in the Keynote Settings or filtering your Keynote Schedule By Sheet?
If you are setting that in the keynote settings I would personally recommend changing your numbering method to By Keynote and if needed filter the keynote legend.
I did not have the legend set to filter by sheet. That is why it wasn't working. Changing the key note setting was creating some sort of conflict and giving me a complete list of numbers without a description.
I copied a view that has Key Notes on it. Then applied a view template to create a different discipline view. Then I erased all of the annotations on...
