    Complex stair modeling

    Anyone have a good strategy as to how to model this stair that our designer made in Sketchup?

    The landings have radiused corners, and the outside guardrail, made of wood, cants outward as the landings.

    I was thinking of creating a mass with an angled face and hosting the angled/curved walls to that face. The walls on the outside perimeter of the actual stair portion curve in plan and have been hosted top and bottom to a reference plane to get the angle. Inside guardrail is glass.

    Would it make more sense to model as a railing? Actual construction of wall will be metal stud anchored to stair stringer, clad with plywood and then have wood paneling hung off the plywood.

    Definitely not out of the Railing Tool. Not if you need it to be vertical on the sides, and switch to outward cant, at the landings. Definitely a Mass and Walls-by-face, if its me.

      Ok, thanks. All of the stair is modeled in the base Revit project model, you think the best thing to do is model mass in place?

        I don't know about other users, but I have significant performance issues when I try to model masses in place even for small things it seems to bog down. So try it in place, if you don't have performance issues(while creating the mass), then you are rocking, if you find you do, export your stair to DWG(I see you cringing Aaron, bring it into the mass environment to use as an aide to make the mass around, then delete the dwg before you load the family in.

          As others have mentioned mass + Walls by face is the most likely direction. I would suggest a separate mass family (not in place) this helps with file size and far easier to archive versions if needed.

          Another option rather that. Remodel it, is bring the sketchup geometry through Formit 360. It may take a little cleanup (due to in accuracies often found in sketchup) make it water tight and then translate to a revit family. Better yet, have the user who created the sketchup model clean it up in revit and let
          You know when it ready to be loaded into revit.

          Or maybe an adaptive component if you want it on the railing category.

          Avoid that DWG, maybe a Sat into revit, but you aren't going to get a Sat out of sketchup anytime soon.
