utilization of building information modeling (BIM) in general contractors

    Hello,
I have been asked to talk about these general themes, almost too general for me.

On utilization of building information modeling (BIM) in general contractors

    (1) What kind of process is BIM sharing between companies

    (2) What are the issues in sharing BIM among companies

    (3) Comments on commercialization of platform services for sharing BIM among companies

Any suggestions for links filled about this matter?
Materials about 2 and 3 are most welcome.
I recall the Augi magazine only.
    thanks

      Yes its too general.

      1. Break this down by discipline.
      2. interoperability, number 1 problem, number 2 problem is competency levels of players involved, number 3 is lack of BIM standards (although that is improving)
      3. er....money is your god... of course its going to be commercialised, otherwise what is the incentive for support, and development? There are some open source things around however...but the current commercial products outshine them in general.

        Piece of string...?

But (generally) the norm (as I see it) is that it is not companies directly discussing ideas and concepts, but people (from companies) striving to make their lives (to the benefit of their respective firms') "easier" in the better interests of the industry (though that tends to translate more to the direct benefit of the particular project to which such intiative is directed)

BIM knowledge or "BIM" as a/the thing?

If the former, obviously it's all R&D ROI and vested-interested commercial advantage (bad for the industry collectively, but that's the world at large)

If the latter, none, unless you're a legalese-wrangling jobsworth.

Enterprise contracts and agreements will always muddy the openness of "OpenBIM", but people need to get paid, and tech. development ain't cheap - so there's little point bemoaning the advantages others with bigger budgets might have - engage in what you can, and elect (at a company level) where you want to place yourselves - you're well entitled to be the clandestine lurker farming knowledge and never contributing to growth, it's not "selfish" (more "poor show") but such is human nature.

Thankfully there are still many (as you will note having found this forum) willing to throw all nervy-busines-tactic-caution out the window and help (improve our industry through knowledge sharing).
