No Length Attribute in Schedule?

    No Length Attribute in Schedule?

    Hi,

    We used to take Revit models provided to us by engineers, and create Material Schedules (View > Schedule/Quantities) for the steel columns and the steel beams & bracing (steel framing) for import into our estimating system.

    Recently we have noticed that when we produce these schedules, that all the members in the model don't seem to carry a value in 'Length' or 'Span' anymore, which is odd when they hold a physical presence in the model. This length/span is not making it's way into the schedule, and without these attributes the schedules are serving no purpose to us.

    Is this a recent change in the software or something else? It seems to be the same on all models we recieve from different sources and seemed to change about 3 months ago.

    Further to the above, on further investigation it appears in the model that I have, that ‘analytical columns’ carry a length attribute, but ‘columns’ do not. Could the issue be linked to this? Could it be that for some reason only analysed members carry this attribute? If so, how do i overcome that, and why has this only recently seemed to become a problem?

      "Columns" is a category made for things like decorative pilasters and fur-outs around structural columns. Look at "Structural Columns" (these are accociated with the anyalytical columns), and the length should be there.

        Understanding the logic (?) subcategories and consequences for the derived parameter is for a new user be user working with it quite a challenge..

          Exactly!

          In case you have architectural columns placed in your model and you want to convert them to structural columns, try the following:
          1. Edit the column family.
          2. Go to the Create tab > Category and Parameters.
          3. Change the Family Category from Columns to Structural Columns.
          4. Reload the family back into the project.

            SO I probably didn't give enough detail when i first posted. I had further problems with structural columns not showing up on the schedule. All of the above answers also didn't address the omission of the 'length' attribute.

            Anyway....

            I went back to the engineer and told him all the issues, and questioned as to whether or not it was something to do with his design model and the export from that to Revit. Maybe it wasn't being carried out properly or diligently.

            Lo and behold, I now have received a new engineer updated model, and this model has NONE of the above problems. All the memebers now carry a length.

            So thanks for all the input and effort guys, and although you haven't provided me with an answer, we have got one in the end, and i guess as a warning sign it is definitely worth double checking that any import into Revit from a third party design software is being exported/imported with the correct settings to ensure "Length" is being carried through on all members.
