Zoned model files > Single Model file

I have a plumbing project which is 44 stories. The Arch & Mech are separated into 7 vertical zones. I have followed this zoning and each zone also contains sheets, filters, CAD links etc. I am now thinking this is more work than if it was 1 whole model and also believe it would be easier to design and visualize the systems being a whole model building. I am up to zone 4 (L15) and am contemplating stitching these zones into a single model file...

I don't believe the file would get too large if I did this. I was thinking I could set aside 1 day to try and see how it goes if I fail I can always revert back and I only loose a day...

I would like to get others thoughts on this. BTW using Revit MEP 2012.

    1. Am I to far in to try this? What are the issues?

    2. How should I go about this? I was thinking of opening the tallest zone, linking the others in, binding and re-connecting as needed.

    3. Views: Will I have to re-create all views, call outs, sections, sheets etc or can I re-insert some how?

    4. Annotations: Can I copy and paste from files back into the master?

    5. Revisions: Do I have to recreate all revisions etc?

    5. Any advise?

    Thanks in advance.

You are the best judge of too far, how much rework are you willing to incur?

Use the "best" model, the one with the most good stuff already in it. Bind the rest into it.

Yes you will have to recreate most of the views. The Insert from File feature can help with some views, just not those that contain model 3d elements.

Yes, you can. The Paste into current view option will usually help things land in the right place. Tags however won't copy/paste successfully if they don't find a proper reference when they "land" in the new file.

    Yes

Of all the disciplines, yours is most likely to be able to get away with the single model. The other teams may want you to provide exported information, like say for Navisworks, broken into the zones you describe. If so you'll want to set up views and possibly use worksets to provide the zone strategy but allowing you to keep it all in one project file. You should also discuss it with the other teams because they might be annoyed to find all 44 floors when they have models with smaller portions of the building in them. Yours would "stick" out above and below and create visibility/graphics issues for them.
