More realistic rendering?

It's not necessarily about the age of the program. 3ds Max 2008 would give you more potential to make the scene more realistic. I believe Revit's rendering limitations are a conscious decision to hide all the "rendering nastiness", as photorealistic rendering can become truly daunting.
There's plenty of tutorials online if you want to go down that rabbit holeChris Ellersick

Even upgrading to Revit 2012 would result in a better image. Photoshop will be your friend otherwise.RB Cameron, AIA, LEED AP, EDAC, NCARB

I think 2008 had Mental ray, if so, upgrading to 2012 wouldn't do anything. Something looks really odd about his materials. Like its a shaded view, not real world materials or he is just using colors and not image maps and custom materials. I suspect upgrading alone will do you no good. You need to swap out your materials for some image based materials.Scott D. Brown, AIA | Senior Project Manager | Beck Group

I remember 2008. <shudders> It had Accurender. only. The unholy offspring of a potato shredder and an Apple II.
Revit : Rendering in Revit Architecture 2009 This was the greatest day of April of 2008 for me when it released.
Its honestly not THAT bad of a rendering should you put a little time in photoshop to adjust the levels, HDRI that puppy and play with the colors and contrast.RB Cameron, AIA, LEED AP, EDAC, NCARB

Upgrade to 2009
You should probably upgrade to Revit 2009 ,if you want to stick with the old GUI , there is some significant improvement with the rendering,
here two examples done with Revit 2009, no photoshop, basic material, basic lightning, medium setting,
if You want, you send me the project, then I hit render with Revit 2009 to see what come out,
If the project can be share,
could miss some texture,soo
cheers,
