    Linking 3D CAD models into Revit

    We often get 3D CAD models from consultants who model in something other than Revit. When we link the model into our Revit file, it does not "cut" when you do a section view. Instead the section view shows the Revit content as expected and ALL of the CAD file.

    I have seen and tried other methods, and have settled on creating a generic model family and inserting the 3D model into it and then load into Revit. It works a little bit better, but not great.

    Has anyone come up with a good way to get a linked 3D CAD model to "cut" properly in a section view?

    I've had the occasion to link in some sketchup geometry(horror!) and encountered the same issue. The way to get it to cut was to bring it into a mass family first and then insert that mass into the project. Only then did it cut as expected.

      I've experimented this a few times, with various results.
      True Autocad dwg files have nice sections views, but exported dwg from "exotic" soft doesn't work well.
      Also, it depends on how the export was made, meaning options and export properties.(just as in Revit..)
      *.sat files, coming from Inventor, works fine with sections views, but not at 100%.

      Sketchup files must always be imported in families - mass family for buildings, after that you'll be able to use "by face" tools on it. Usefull sometimes...

      Post your file, we may try it if needed.

        Thanks for the tip. I tried the mass family and when i tried to load it, it gave me an error message that the mass had to many edges. It is a fire sprinkler lay-out for one level of a building. I can try splitting it up by trial and error, but does anyone know what the limit of edges is?

        Thanks for the help. I mentioned the error message I was getting above. I have attempted to post the file (1.8 MB) but it tells me the file is invalid.

          Uhhm.. .dwg and .sat files where not on the "to do" list when setting up the allowed file extensions

                I'm sorry, can you explain this further? I'm also getting the "too many edges" error (also on a fire sprinkler CAD file I'm trying to insert as a link).

                  Sorry, that reply was related to the forum functionality only... Have nothing to do with Revit.

                  Would suggest that you remodel the sprinkler in Revit, and maybe simplify the geometry if you don´t need to show it 100% accurate in 3D views etc.

                    Thanks. This is actually a consultant file that is sent over to me, and is going to be updated fairly frequently, so that's probably going to be a bit too much for me to keep up with. I might just go into CAD and delete the stuff I don't need in my Revit views instead.
