    Family vs Adaptive Component

    I have been looking more and more in to AC and was curious what people's opinions were of these. Right now one of our projects is modeling the precast pieces for our structure, but as families the team seems to be running into many issues. I was thinking about trying to use ACs instead of families to make precast parts for the next project. Anyone have some pros and cons for using each and some experiences...just some more information on ACs vs Families.

    Maybe you can describe or show what kind of "precast pieces for our structure" you're talking about... what do you have in mind?

    Family and Adaptive components are quite different in their intended use. You suggest that you've already looked into AC, so maybe you already know this, but according to the Revit User's Guide, "You can place the adaptive model within another adaptive component, in a conceptual mass, in curtain panels, and in-place masses." Does that sound like you're still in the ballpark of what you're looking to do with them?

      Hypothetically, if or when AC's become placeable within the project environment without the hack of placing them in an in-place family, ill be looking at them for a lot of our content, because i love the way they work. But for now, i use them very infrequently. I dont want people jumping in to in-place families just to place stuff in a model thats tricky.

        What I had in mind was that all our precast pannels (walls, beams, columns, etc are done as families) and I was thinkng instead to do them as an AC. From what twiceroads said, you can't just place them into a project with out having in-place which I am not crazy about that either, however, I really thought I saw some being place directly into a project, so I will look into that a little more because if I can not place them on their own I really do not want to do inplace for all my components in my building.

          Youre placing them natively in the project, INSIDE an In-place Family. Currently they cannot be placed natively in the project environment.

            Still not sure how those objects would greatly benefit, unless they're some pretty wild shapes. But always interesting to explore, so let us know what you come up with!

              The only possible way I see you benefitting from this is when you have a lot of tapered (is this the correct english term? I mean different sizes for front and end) structural members with a lot of variation in it. This would be easier to model using AC's.
              For me, they're great as toys, but I fail to see the day-to-day use of them in the current situation. It's nice to fool around with (check out Zach Krohn's blog) but for anyone not modelling weirdass shapes on a daily base I don't see a practical use. Off course, this would change if one can use them in any given family.
