    Has Anyone Used Parts Effectively?

I created a test model to better understand parts and how one can demo a finish on an existing stud wall without demoing the stud. Works great! If anyone has actually utilized parts on a project, could you provide some insight on attributes and pitfalls?

Why are you deliberately trying to poke Aaron in the eye?

    Queue up Aaron's response...

The shorter answer to your question is that parts are not equal citizens in Revit world yet, for example nearly no parameters to speak of. Try doing all the things you think you need to do with those parts and see how you feel about them.

I am apprehensive about using parts for a large project like this unless I am sure that my model will not be all screwed up, I try to avoid situations where every end user wants to draw and quarter the BIM Manager.

LOL at Steve priming the thread for me.

I like and use Parts... for diagramming things. Tearing away layers in an axon, etc. But for actual documentation, here are my issues:

My disdain for parts is rooted in what Steve mentioned: They arent handled like normal objects in the model.

            1. Visibility of Parts is handed in the View controls, not VG (Show parts, show original, show both). But there is no option: "Show parts if they exist, or show original." So if you try to use parts as part of the architectural documentation, it becomes "pretty all or nothing."

            2. When it becomes All or Nothing, it gets really crummy that you have to Part items one at a time. I think Julien Benoit has created an app that helps his office automate that, but i dont know if its available to others, or if Dynamo is up to the task. But you'll see that schedules and views quickly get jacked up, since youll need Parts schedules to mimic your Objects (walls, floors, ceilings, roofs) schedules. Yuck.

            3. Its not just your views, its your consultants. I had a consultant do structural demo with Parts. If a consultant isnt aware another consultant did that? They might never see it, as THEIR view settings might be set to not show parts (Show Original).

            4. The fact that they can have their thickness and material changed (and then we cant tag walls and have confidence that they are correct, unless we leave BOTH visible) makes it somewhat of a nightmare.

I think the idea of using Parts for diagramming, and COnstruction Logistics scheduling, is great. Using them in Design, for Finishes, Selective demo, etc... I think its a joke. Strictly my opinion though, and now ill queue up Cliff to come in and talk about how his BIM with parts is the best BIM ever done!

              Thanks for the response Aaron.
The only scenario that I can see where it would be handy without being confusing is where you were demoing exterior wall finishes and openings where a new addition would abut the existing structure. What are your thoughts on not eliminating the use but to limiting the use to an agreed to scenario for Arch demo only?

My thoughts are all of the issues above still apply. I have done a ton if renovation, and I wouldn't do it with parts. If I need to strip finishes off a wall, I break the wall in to multiple wall types.

But remember... that's just my opinion. Parts may work great for you.

My normal workflow includes using multiple wall types as well, just curious about parts.

No thanks---I'm just sitting on the side-lines, drinking Kool-Aid, stripping Parts off of my Tilted Walls. :ka::hide:
