Does anyone have experience in creating a grille that is mounted directly onto the side of the ductwork, any suggestions or ideas on how to do this?

I have never tried this, but since no one has replied I thought I would respond. What I would do is use an existing grill, but bring it into a facebaced family and then when you go to place it select the face of the duct you would like it on.
If there is not a facebaced family type for mechanical items, make it a faced based generic model and then switch it to the correct family type inside the family. -

From my experience with other elements this is not possible. I.E. my rebar can not pull any information from the slab, column, beam that it is hosted in and vise versa.Comment

In Revit 2011 at least, if you use the Rectangular Tap -Beveled there is an instance parameter under dimensions called Takeoff Fixed Length. The default length is 4". You can attach your sidewall diffuser to it and then adjust this number down to say 1/2" or 1". It is not a true representation of what is going on but it allows for the diffuser cfms to propogate through the duct system. This has worked well for us.Comment

If you create a grill with the connection on the opposite side and the connector facing backwards it looks right and the data shows up. But it is abit of faking and you still need some sort of take-off even if it is only tiny.Comment

Hi!!
I think I found an easier way to do this (?). Just learned how to do it today after pulling my hair out yesterday.
So I took an existing side wall diffuser/grille and modified its family. There was three extrusions - the first being the grille itself, the second the part that connects the grille to the duct and the third part is "the duct".
You take the third extrusion and fix the dimension of that (aka how thick the duct can be in the wall). Then you add a connector to the top of that third part.
Horray!! Now I can move foward with putting in my low wall exhaust ducts!Comment

I came accross this when searching for a solution to a different problem and thought of you...
Could you not make a diffuser / grill family and under Family Category and Parameters set the Part Type to Breaks Into? Wouldn't the diffuser / grill connector then 'break into' the ducting directly without the need for connectors and such?
Just a thought...I could be horribly wrong...

Short answer: use Revit 2014, they added a "Mount Diffuser to Duct" option. If you're stuck in a previous version, there's really no easy way to do it, Revit will always need a Fitting -> Duct -> Air Terminal assembly.Originally posted by shadab.apex View PostComment
