StrokeIt and SpeedyUI (mouse stroke menus)

EDIT Demo video at post #10

I have been using StrokeIt for quite a few years now and wrote a Auto Hotkey script to run in cojunction with it, to speed up the process of moving around the desktop and working through menus.
For those who don't know StrokeIT is a mouse gesture program that links mouse strokes to hotkeys,( hold down RIGHT mouse button and make a gesture (strroke) to activate a shortcut.
I have gone one step further and associated mouse strokes (Right button) that activate menus at the curser. These menu's I have ordered to suit myself but if you are keen I have supplied the autohotkey script that you can recompile to suit yourself.
Once you get use to the mouse gestures and location of menus and menu items you will find you it a very quick user interface to use.
Everything you need is in .zip file but you will have to download StrokeIt (free) from

and if you want to do some script writting download Autohotkey (free) from

Free keyboard macro program. Supports hotkeys for keyboard, mouse, and joystick. Can expand abbreviations as you type them (AutoText).

    --------------------------------
    Instructions (copy inside zip file)

    1. install strokit (free)
    download from http://www.tcbmi.com/strokeit/

    2. double click on "REVIT 2011 Export.SXP" to import
    revit settings into strokeit

    3. open strokeit and Revit, then see "Strokeit setup.pdf" to see how to
    associate strokeit to revit

    4. Either merge "MB Revit KeyboardShortcuts" into your existing revit shortcuts
or I would backup your existing shortcuts file and then just overwrite with mine.
So you can replace if need be.

    5. copy "MB speedyui 3.3" (green icon with H on it) too..I usually place on desktop.

    Thats it

    Start Revit,
Start strokeit (if not already running with windows startup)
and double-click on "MB speedyui 3.3"script
In revit hold down RIGHT mouse button and make gesture (stroke)
as in "Menu Stroke" PDF to get menus at cursor.

Takes a little getting use to but once you do it's very quick.

    Hope you like it

Thanks Mark. I think I must be missing something then. The mouse gestures look like they want to work- I see a purple line when I right-click and drag, however nothing happens. I can use the shortcut keys, for instance Shift-F4 brings up the 'Home' context box.

    Did I forget something?

If you can see menus with shift+F2 F3 etc thats good means script is working.
can only be associating strokIt to revit.

Open strokeit, can you see REVIT 2011 list of applications (it should have a list of commands as well) ?
If not double click (or in strokeit File\import config and path to) "REVIT 2011 Export" file to import settings.
If you can see REVIT 2011 config it can only be associating REvit with strokeIt "see StrokeIt setup PDF" in zip file
this is usually the problem but once associated in runs flawlessly.
In strokit ( and have Revit open with an open progect)
Click on REVIT 2011 in list of applications
Remove any thing in "application Identifers"
      Click Add
Then drag the little "target" (finder tool) and drop it onto the
menu bar of the open revit project then click ok.
You should then see FILE:Revit.exe in the "Application Identifiers" window
      Hope that helps

When I try to Add Revit while dragging the target icon onto the Revit window, this is what is returned:

        Not sure what that means.

Very strange ! havn't seen this before. I have set this up on many machines without an issue.
i just did an experiment with mine and removed existing path and then just typed Revit.exe in the box the ticked File Name
and it worked. I don't know if it was was because it has been associated before, maybe try that.
If not uninstall and reinstall strokIt
let me know how you get on

            works brilliantly, thanks mark!!! :beer::beer::beer:

one step closer to a user-friendly Revit, hopefully my left (keyboard) hand won't get jealous.

+1 to your reputation for sure

Edit: because i can never leave things alone (and you offered!) i'm looking at editing your .ahk script. i see the first line states this script is for revit 2010. I can tell you it works with revit 2011 too

i have been up all night making a small video (my first and very rough) so everyone can understand and appreciate how this works.
It is 3.5mb .wmv file but I don't think I can upload it here can anyone advise on how to post it ?

Elton glad you tried it and like it . I wish a few more would have ago and see how it works, i am sure like yourself they would be most impressed with the speed and ease of how your work becomes. Using this with just a numberpad lets you sit back from your keyboard and relax and give your brain a chance to stop trying to remember keyboard shortcuts.
Elton any promotion would be greatly accepted.

Good onya have a play its not to hard to understand how it works once you study it. Re-order items in the menus to suit yourself, and no don't worry about or change 2010 to 2011 dosn't matter.

If you make changes you will need Autohotkey installed.
Make your changes then right click on script file, in menu you will see first three items, just click "compile script" and that will generate new (green H) file and your done.

Awesome - I´d love to see that vid, so .wmv files (up to 4mb) are now allowed as attachements

You could also upload to youtube, and post it as inline vid, using the videoicon in "post reply" (like I did in this post)

O.K here you go. sorry very crappy production and house, big learning curve on making vid. and very nervous (stage fright) but I think it gives a rough idea on how it works.

goodnight its very late see you in the morning
