Aside from retarded?.. Cut the detail in plan (but you have to use section obviously, not detail), orient the 3d view to it, place both on a sheet on top of each other, turn everything off in the 2d section as well as the view title.

Not very clean and only works on paper; if you try to link to the detail in the plan you jump to a blank view in revit. Could work for things like ADR which actually jumps to the drawing on the sheet.

LOL, I was actually really close to giving that answer.
Frankly, I have none... Went with the "retarded" version of creating a 3D sectioned view, put in some "boxes" (GM components, with Shared Parameters -text- for detail number and description and ghost the "box" to make it semi-transparent.
Would be awesome to have the section box of the 3D detail show up in the sectioned view though.

Create a dummy drafting view to reference with a section or elevation key. Place that on the sheet over your 3d view. You have to draw something in the drafting view to place it on a sheet, but just hide it after you place it.

Advantages: ?
Disadvantages: useless line in drafting view to make it placeable on a sheet; no longer have a section view to orient 3d view to.

It's be more awesome if they just enabled referencing 3D views with callout and section marks.

But how do you phantom this? You'll need a 2D annotation to show up in 3D... Is the section mark a plane? is the callout only visible when the section box is cutting it exactly? I'd bet the actual 3D representation of the cropped view is easier to "read" for someone looking at the drawings.

Ah, you're asking for the other way around than me; I'm asking for a way to reference TO a 3D detail FROM a 2D view. A simple referenced callout or section works for me. I see what you're saying about the section box, but have you ever looked at a section box or a scope box in a busy model/view? It's hard to tell exactly where the edges are in the box. Case in point, in a 3D view of a large model, turn on the section box and try to land the edges exactly where you want them on the first try.

Maybe as we migrate towards 100% digital submittal then we just add nodes in the model where the contractor clicks and gets a cutaway of the model at that point.

Another option that I just thought of could be a derivation of the system that Gherry Designs uses in their 3D model projects when translated to 2D documents: you place a project mark that references another view. So your 3D view has those nodes mentioned above with a leader pointing to a very specific point in the view. That could reference the 3D detail elsewhere in the model/set.
