    the imperial vs metric thing

    I have imported imperial families before into my metric project a few years ago, and I have forgotten exactly what happened. Can they convert automatically and apart from type naming titles, get 'reborn' as a metric family as far as the project/scheduling is concerned?
    How does it all work?

    A metric family can be used in an imperial project and vice versa as well. Revit does not care what the authoring unit is. It just brings it into the project. As you indicated the naming might be messed up if your family names or type names refer to the units of the family.

        Reason for this is: it's all imperial under the hood... only thing is that it will default back to the original units in the family editor.

          Actually it is the reverse. It is all metric "under the hood". At least that is what I have been told by some old timers from Revit development. Heck, at this point many would consider me one of the Revit "old timers". User since version 3, on development team since Revit 9 (maybe 8.1?).

            But when using the API, I need to convert everything from imperial to metric... There's no way to do it in metric! That would really be weird, all is metric, then hardcoded to imperial in the API, and after that I need to impose a string to revert to metric... Now my head hurts!

              Not everything. Only length is imperial. There is a blog at thebuildingcoder.typepad.com about this issue. Also it is explained in the SDK. The api exposes internal units directly: feet for length metric for everything else.

                Now I'm getting really confused (and maybe we should move this to the API forum): how can it be that length is in feet, but area is metric while Revit "knows" that length*length = area...? Why isn't that metric then?
                To be honest: I only noticed the length to be imperial, and just assumed everything else would be too...
