Well, it IS kind of consistent. All tagging of linked files are essentially xrefs/hyperlinks to the original file. Why should this be different?

Looking at them like xrefs, we can adjust what we "see" in a linked file using VG settings, and since a schedule is just another "view" and the parametric data within them subject to field formatting, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to dig that extra step deeper (OOTB) with how linked file information can be reported.

I don't think it's even that much of a specialist/unique requirement, since model-practice, multi-discipline, multi-model projects are still the norm over single-location one-central-model-to-rule-them-all setups, so the use of "project" overview models are still quite common.

Yeah, but there's a flaw in that line of thinking: you can change the APPEARANCE of the tags as you like. There's no need to use tags that are also in the linked file. You just can't change the MODEL through a linked file, which is what you want to do. Rooms and their Areas are also model elements. And you cannot change their properties through the link. I totally agree with you that this is a major drag. But for me, it is logical. You also can't change a wall type or even the Location Line through a linked file.

But what really bugs me is that you cannot have Revit calculate different areas in one project. In holland we have different types of areas, with different calculation rules, which cannot be used side by side in a project. Would love to see the area calculation rules be Phase based or something like that. That would really solve some major problems for me, as we need those different Area types throughout the design process...
