With the new opportunity to free upgrade to 3D max, most of us will need to know what are the benchmarks for different "recent" CPUs in a "recent" version of 3D max in a multithread scalable renderer engine like Mental Ray (free for those that have 3d Max).
As you will find out, most on the benchmarks on the internet for rendering in 3D max are syntetic tests (usually builded on an old 3dmax2009) that are using the default skyline engine witch (as i understand) it not scales good on multi threads. Anyway nobody render in skyline anymore so that kind of benchmarks are not so good for us.
After some googling i`ve find a local site (anadtech like) that has a very interesting article for us. They have a render scene, free for download, that use mental ray engine and that was used to make the benchmark tests for the new CPUs out there (also for overclocked versions). So you can compare the results with your own processor. Just download, open the Max trial, and press render. At the end in the down left corner of the window (of 3d max aplication not the render picture) you will see the render time.
The team behind the site has real professionists (they won MSI Master Overclocking Arena 2011 for EMEA -europe/middle est/africa, one of the members also being "en titre" world champion at Gigabyte Open Overclocking Championship). The platforms used for test are listed on the first pages of the review if you are interested.
Ok, here there are the things that are interesting for us (google translated versions)
also the results picture is attached.
The scene used for testing is avaliable to download here
Good luck with testing.
