    How to decrease .rvt file?

    My project file weights 32Mb. Maybe i can make somehow to decrease file size? and maybe i could make something that it could load/work smoother? :coffee:

    32MB is a very small Revit file. Most Templates are larger than that.

    However, you can make it smaller by doing several things:

    1. Purge unused families
    2. Delete all Cadd imports/links
    3. Delete all Raster Images
    4. Compact the file on STC.

    There are other ways as well, but at 32 MB I would not be very concerned. Our file sizes on average are over 200MB--with several of them all linked together, plus Structural and MEP links.

        well i didnt say that i have lags etc, i was curious how it can be done, but hey, thanks anyway.


          Don't overuse "3D" families. No sense in having a 3D toilet if you're not doing renderings of the bathroom.


            I couldnt disagree more. We dont have any non-3D content anymore. Theres plenty of sense in having 3D toilets- Plumbing coordination, clearances, and the famileis with 2d linework in all the views actually take longer to make, with less return on investment since they only show up in perfectly orthangonal views.

            A 35MB file is tiny. A blank file here dwarfs that. Revit isnt going to be as punchy and zippy as CAD, or Sketchup. You get used to it. But if youre having hardware issues, time to upgrade. Consumer level computers are powerful enough and cheap enough that there is no longer a need to be pulling punches with what gets modeled, and how large a revit file gets.

              Complex surface drafting patterns slow things down a whole lot more than you think.

              Images / renderings captured into your project are always surprising in how much they can add to the file size.

              Those are the only two easy ones I can think of, other than purging unused stuff. Revit 2012 does use a lot more of the graphics card, it's triggering an upgrade here for one of our older computers.

              Everything else gets into selective loading of worksets and redoing your families and stuff.

                @Cliff Collins: Our file sizes are reaching 200MB quite consistently.. with all the other consultant files linked also. I have heard of another firm that has files from 400-500MB!.. I though there was a cutoff where Revit couldn't handle it. Is this false? Perhaps Revit can take as much RAM as we give it provided it's on a 64bit machine.


                  I thought we had this question settled too but have added new people who are insisting that 3D families are causing files to be difficult to handle, ie slow. I don't agree and think that the number of links, rvt and dwg, has more to do with it that family size. For instance, one project has 35 unit type and 300 units total so it's trying to refresh that many instances of the links and taking a while. The file itself is only 92 mb and the links are about 5 mb a piece.

                  Has anyone run into a limit on how many linked files are reasonable in a project?


                    Just because people on the team are re-insisting its the problem, doesnt mean that they have any clue what theyre talking about, lol. You have 300 links @ 5MB each. Thats a massive amount of data. Of course its going to refresh slow. It has nothing to do with *number* of links, its a ton of stuff either way you slice it. What i do? I put the first of each unit "type" on a workset, and the rest of that unit "type" on another workset called "Repetitive links." That way, ill never load repetitive links unless im plotting, exporting, or whatever. It only has one link to populate when you update or reload a link.

                    3D families have ZERO to do with your performance problem. You have Project staff making assumptions because stuff is slow and they dont know why.

                    DWG = slows stuff down insanely.
                    Lots of surface patterns = slows view regen down.
                    In place families = slows down the model
                    Room errors / Space errors / Area errors = Makes EVERYTHING drop to its knees.
