    How do I get pendant lights to hang from the ceiling that appear not to be there?

    I received a Revit model from the GC and am trying to put the electrical in place. I must say it has been very trying! I am trying to place a "pendant light -linear 2 lamp" 9 foot AFF. I cannot seem to find a ceiling in the Arch. model and the RCP shows an open ceiling. I tried to place above the floor, but it places the fixture upside down. Any help would be greatly appriecated.

    Could you post the family and/or projectfile? It's kind of hard to determine the problem, could be anything.

      Change it to a face-based family from a ceiling-hosted family--this way you can have it attach to something other than the "missing ceiling".

        Is there a quick way to change the host of a family?

        If it's made of a nested generic model, then hosted into a family it's easy. But what if it's modeled in the hosted template? I've been trying to copy and paste it into the new type of hosted template. It's hit and miss.

          No quick way.
          There is NO quick way to do anything MEP in Revit.
          Keep in mind when Copy clipping into another project within Revit you must have both files open.
          Copy clipping multiple nested familes will not work.

            Well, at least I know I'm doing it the only way it can be done. I hate doing something for a year, just to find out there's an easier way. :laugh:

              As mdradvies said "could be anything" my first thought would be to add reference planes at the heights that the ceilings are supposed to be and you will be able to use a face based light fixture hosted to the reference plane.

              As far as the fixture being upside down the issue could be that it was modeled that way in the family editor. For whatever reason when creating face based light fixture families the geometry for the fixture must be modeled upside down in order for it to be right side up when loaded into a project.........Makes A LOT of sense NO!!????

                If the family is ceiling hosted, can you not host it onto the slab in the meantime and then offset the distance of the ceiling plenum?

                  Its not ceiling hosted if its letting him put it on the floor, upside down. That says its Work Plane Based (unhosted) or Face Based, and hes just placing it incorrectly. If its an open ceiling, make a reference plane at 9' AFF and Name it "9ft aff". Set that as your work plane, go to an RCP, and place it, using the "place on Work Plane" option.

                  RME is plenty fast, if you know how to use it correctly.

                    make sure that ref plane is drawn in reverse order to avoid upside-down issue, just curious if there's a way to "flip" existing ref plane?
