Thanks Alf! I can see Mies saying something along those lines too. I did find the St Augustine quotes, and I can see them inspiring the quote I am looking for. I may need to see if the Portland Library has the book you mention. Or I may need to email an Arch History prof. Just gonna save time.

Gordon, I remember reading something similar to the quote you remember, in a book called "Oral History of Modern Architecture", in the chapter dedicated to the interviews with Mies Van der Rohe. In that interview, Mies cites Saint Augustine, as the author of a quote that says that Beauty comes from Truth. Unfortunately, I don´t have the book with me now, so I cannot cite the exact words nor can I remember them very well, but this might give you another clue about the author.

It is a good quote, isn't it? Something about "right making" just sounds profound. And I kinda like the idea that architecture can be profound. Obviously the sentiment that beauty isn't the goal, but is a required result, is important. Kahn got it, and Fuller. And Apple. I wish the sentiment was more prevalent.

EDIT: Dang, now a Google search on "right making" puts this thread at the top of the list! Having an Anubis Gates moment?

Or you can just say JCM said that in a very brief and unique moment of Inspiration

Very nearly certain I never came up with something that good. And for sure someone remembers who did right after I claim it as my own!
Naw, if nothing else I use the quote and claim unknown provenance.

Both good, and maybe I am just misremembering. Or combining another quote with the Fuller quote. Ah well. I guess I just have to use one of those or come up with my own for the little thing I am writing.

    Thanks!

This is the closest I could come up with...

"Design is not making beauty, beauty emerges from selection, affinities, integration, love."

Searching for the originator of a quote

From school I remember a quote, almost certainly attributed to someone famous. I remember the quote, but not who it belongs to. Hopefully our knowledgable and diverse group can fill in my poor memory. The quote is (something close to)...

"Beauty is not the goal of making, but it is the result of right making."

The unusual use of "making", and especially "right making", is the part I am most confident of. The rest could be more paraphrasing than I want to admit.

Anyone remember who said something like this?

    thanks!
    Gordon
