    How To? Fixture Units to SF within Pipe.....

    OK, So I probably confused you all. Here is what we are "trying" to do. In our Roof Plumbing plans, we show Roof/Overflow Drains with the coverage area in square feet. This is an instance parameter within the family that is entered manually. We had the idea to get that SF to carry through the pipe using flow/fixture units so it would add up after intersections and we could tag a section of pipe and the SF would add up for us.

    I've attached a screen of the Drain Tag with SF. The connector flow configuration is set to fixture units. I created a new fixture units type shared parameter and mapped fixture units to the connector. I also have a formula within the family that converts the drain area parameter to fixture units. The formula is "Drain Area X 32 (this number is arbitrary). Revit converts the result into Fixture Units and it calcs through the pipe.

    My dilemma is getting a pipe tag to get the FU value converted back to SF. Since pipe types are system families, I cant "edit" them to add a parameter with a formula to convert that back. I can push a parameter to pipe through a schedule, but in order for it to have a formula, it needs to be a calculated value, but that cant be transferred into a tag. At least not that I see. Am I missing something?

    Is this just a pipe dream?

    You could use your fittings - ie at a connection "Tee" you could have the total fixture units and use that parameter in the family to populate a SF parameter. Not as practical maybe but other than that all I can think of is maybe using a project parameter in your pipework and using BIMlink to export to excel and calculate from there?

      Sounds feasible, however I don't see a fixture units parameter within the fitting. Not using BIMlink either.

        You would have to put it in - it means you would need to make the 2 inlet connectors of your Tee Calculated and add their values together to give a preset (total) value for the outlet. Makes it harder to connect your pipe though as it won't behave like a normal fitting (you need to make sure it is orientated correctly). Don't know if the workflow is really worth it for a tee I guess, but you could also just use a union with the parameter added in and do it that way?

          Tried it using a Union. Added the paramaters I needed. Change the connector to be sanitary, changed the flow config to FU. Mapped the FU Shared Parameter to FU. Loaded into my test file. The FUs added up on the pipe. When I added the union I just created, one of the values become a negative number and than the FU zeros out on either side of the union.

          Ive tried linking the connectors, changing their direction (only get in/out). When I remove the union, everything adds up as it should.
