    Custom Material Library in 2012

I've opened an old project with many good mental ray custom materials. I want to copy those out to my newly created custom library. You are suppossed to be able to drag and drop. But I can't seem to figure out how to do it. Any ideas.

From the materials palette, choose the material you want to transfer to your custom library. On the Appearance tab, choose 'By Property Set' for Properties. You'll be prompted to create new property set or select existing property set. Choose the option to create new property set. You'll now have a new property set with the name of the material and it will be listed in the property sets on the Appearance Property Sets tab. Now you can drag and drop that property set to your custom library.

I don't think they could have made this more unintuitive if they tried

This is the key step. When the material is listing "independent" for the properties that means it is in this project only and changes to it will happen in this project only. Once it is "by property set" then the property set can be saved out to a library and used in multiple projects.
