    Beams and Stacked Walls

    Is Revit smart enough to realize that there is a beam in my wall section, and therefore it will know that my CMU wall will not go through the beam, but rest on top of it?

    Or is this something I have to draw w/Detail Components? I'd like to not have to draw my wall sections as DC's.

    If you run an interference check, Revit will detect the interference, but it will not fix it. You need to put the wall on top of the beam.

    I guess you have two options:

    1) If both sides of the beam are infilled with CMU units, leave the wall where it is, and fix the wall section with masking regions/detail components/filled regions, etc.

    2) If there are no portions of CMU on both sides of the beam, simply move the bottom of the wall on top of the beam.

      I have face brick on the exterior of the wall which runs past the beam, I guess that means I will have to go with option 1.

      Is it ever possible to do wall sections without detail components?

        Very good question, which has been a topic of very long debates. I guess that even though we try to "model it as we will build it" that really applies to the bulk of the model, but it is kind of impossible, or at least impractical, to model everything that a wall section needs to show, so you always need to finish up the wall section with detail components, regions, and linework. It does not make sense to model control joints and caulking and all that stuff.

          Well you could break up the wall into two pieces: one for the exterior CMU, another for the rest. But I guess this would be part of the very long debate Alf is referring to.
          Another option (if you use windows and not CW's): create the window using Voids. Use two voids, one for the exterior part and one for the interior part. You would have to make parameters for this, but if you create your opening as a nested component into your window families you'd only have to do it once for the entire library.

            I don't think you could get that detail you showed in the original post without using detail components, but I was able to aswser the basic question of having the block sit on top of the beam and then have the exterior brick run past on the exterior. I did not use masking regions or any detail components to get this result.

            I created 2 walls. The 2nd wall sits a top the beam. I also unlocked the wall layers in the type dialog/structure of the wall. this allowed me to pull down the brick and insulation layer lower than the base of the wall. then I used join geometry to join the upper and lower walls together.

            It is not fully detailed but the condition is modeled.
