Model update from Revit 2008 issues

I opened study model from someone that has revit 2008. (I'm using 2011)

The problem is when it comes time to render the walls don't show up at all.
I created new materials and assigned them to the walls but they show up as if the were never built to begin with.

Unfortunately I'm not at the office so I cant post a screenshot.

You'll just have to take my word for it

Any help will be greatly appreciated

I know how you feel, I had windows delete themselves when I opened/upgraded one of our (now archived) 2008 models in 2011... not cool. And it's something I've raised with Autodesk as a BIG concern.

Do you have older Revit versions available? Maybe create a Virtual Machine (do NOT do this in your workenvironment!!!) and install them. Then do a upgrade in multiple steps. Over the years there have been a lot of major changes, maybe this causes some problems?

I thought I remember hearing that you should upgrade incrementally. So upgrade it to 2009, then 2010 and then 2011? I could be completely wrong as it sounds like a pain but I do remember someone saying something like that before...
