Can Revit import 3D faces to create toposurface?

    Can Revit import 3D faces to create toposurface?

    A land surveyor asks me if Revit can import 3D faces to create its toposurfaces.

    In the past I've just used the contours but he reckons that all Autodesk products should be able to use 3D faces which will be more accurate.

    Would anyone know if this is possible?

    The 3D face isolated to specific layers is possible to use as topo underlay. But it has to come from dwg or dgn. About sat format i am not sure.

      Many thanks,

      I'll ask the surveyor to create the 3d faces in a dwg and see how I get on.

        Revit can create a toposurface from a dwg file made up of 3dfaces. However, is it more accurate? it depends what you are comparing to. The most accurate method I have seen is the list of points in .csv format. That is more accurate than using the 3D imported file.

          I would agree with this. the CSV file is going to be able to have many more points than other methods of transferring in the information. The more points you have the more accurate the toposurface in Revit is going to be. There is probably some point of diminishing returns on the number of points however. The increased accuracy nets very little in the grand scheme of things. How close is "close enough"?

                Thanks all,

                I've not tried csv but logically it should be best.

                In other 3D cad programmes however I notice that importing points and letting the cad programme triangulate the surface is very messy at the boundaries of the survey.

                I think the land surveyor has software which allows him to control what happens at the boundaries... but I'm no expert in these things so I'll ask him again

                  I usually do a split surface at the edge of the toposurface and then delete the outter portion. This gets the edges nice and straight.

                    When the surveyor talks of a 3D face file, he is most likely talking about a TIN file (Triangular Irregular Network)

                    The TIN in ACAD format will basically be the survey points connected with 3D faces, this will give you a more accurate surface than the dumbed down contours, however you will then have contours which Revit defines from the TIN which will more than likely differ from the contours the surveyor will create with their software.

                    So you can then add additional points to the topo using the contour file as well as the TIN file, this will give you a pretty accurate topo that also as fairly clean contours similar to the surveyors contours

                    If you are not working with CSV files, I would ask the surveyor for the TIN as well as the 3D contours file
