No sir... Painting overrides the SURFACE pattern, and the render appearance / surface material. It does NOT override the cut pattern. Its so you DONT have to make sure Safety Red has a Steel Cut Pattern.
I can assign material "Steel" to the geometry through the Material selector. Then i can "Paint" every surface of it with "Paint-Safety Red" and that can be the same safety red i use on all kidns of things, with no cut pattern, and it wont matter.
