Selecting object causes it to move

Just starting out with Revit, following NER book.
Recently Revit started doing something odd. When I select an object, like a urinal, just when I select it, the component will shift about a foot.

Also I notice that when I click Modify or hit Escape, that the monitor screen flickers down a 1/4" then goes back up. I think this has something to do with it.

Also happens with a floor I put in. Sort of makes unusable, when things jump around when I select them.

Anyone else have this happen? Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    GChapp

Welcome to the forums, and to using Revit.

    Two things are happening simultaneously:

    1. You are experiencing *screen dance.* Disregard all of what you read here and on any forums. There is no "proven cause." For everyone that tells you there, is someone else is experiencing screen dance with the exact OPPOSITE condition being true. If you look right below your ribbon, youll notice screen dance is happening because your Option Bar is multiplying in size.

    2. You have *Press and Drag* activated, at the bottom right of the interface.

P&D allows a user to click- and drag/move- an object in one movement. Since your clicking an object and the screen is shifting, its forcing the object to move, similar to if you were to yank a tablecloth.

In general, Press & Drag is the devil and you should turn it off all of the time. It wont stop the screen dance, but itll stop your stuff from moving.

You are so right, it is the option bar adding a bar real quick and disappearing it. Turning off P&D makes it so the objects selected don't get moved by the earthquake.
So now I don't have to worry about the earthquake moving parts of the building around.

I still don't like the dance, if I can get rid of it, I'd like to.

I just tried putting the "Dock at Bottom" option for the Option Bar, and no more earthquake when I hit escape or the Modify button.

      Thanks,

The UI seems to build itself from the top down, so the dance now happens at the bottom in that sitch, but it solves the movement "perception" since the UI builds top down, and the dance is now at the "end."

Glad you got it workable though.

Just found an Autodesk article on this. I had Revit running on my larger monitor, which was plugged into the graphics card as the secondary monitor.
I'm switching them to make the large one primary and will see how it works then (per this article).

Yeah, so again, here is the deal: Youll read things (even from autodesk) that say they solve the problem, and they might... On your machine. But no one item causes it. Ive seen all fo the following do it, and all of the followign be blamed for it:

            1. Dual monitors, different resolutions.
            2. Dual monitors, same resolutitions, different heights, revit on primary.
            3. Dual monitors, same resolutitions, different heights, revit on secondary.
            4. Revit models with Linked Files on single monitors.
            5. Revit models with Linked Files on secondary monitors.
            6. Undocked PP and PB.
            7. Options bar above ribbon
            8. Options bar below ribbon

Literally, ive seen any and all combinations of the above do it. So by all means, try all the options. But there is no single cause or fix for it.

Well, with Pny GTX 660Ti, large monitor on top DVI plug and set to either primary or secondary, and Revit on that monitor, it seems to be fixed for me.
I can put the option bar top or bottom and no more earthquakes.
Now if I put Revit on the small monitor, it still doesn't jump now.
So yeah, does not seem to be consistent as to cause.
But it's fixed for me, so I'm done playing with it.

              Thanks for advice.

That's the operative part. - For you.
Like Aaron says, there are apparently many causes and "solutions" for this problem. Don't be at all surprised if (more likely when) this problem returns.
We've got theoretically identical machines where the "fix" for one machine seems to be the "cause" on the other.

There is something definitely wonky about the Ribbon, and has been since it's birth.
But, hey, old-timers! Remember when it used to jump horizontally, too? Drunken Leprechaun?

Most of these issues can be linked to two major issues:

                  1. Graphics Cards / drivers, and their relationship to which version of Revit and build/update you are running, and which OS--(Win 7 64 Pro, Win 8 ,etc.)

                  2. .NET framework. If you have later than .NET 4.0 in Revit 2012, the ribbon will malfunction. I think there was an update which addressed this?
For Revit 2013, Update 2 fixes ribbon problems with .NET 4.5. Windows 8 uses .NET 4.5 (or later?), so until Adesk officially supports Revit for Win 8, travel at your own risk.

These are just some things I have picked up on as we have gone through the various Revit 2012, 2013, Win 7 and Win 8 graphics / ribbon problems.

Not the case here. 2 identical machines, down to monitor, exact driver, exact windows updates, and .net framework (all managed throufh GPO). Happens on one, not on the other.

Like i said, youll read *causes* from a lot of people.
