    Phases and Linework

I'm getting a few probs with windows and door showing correctly in elevation when using phases. I mainly fix visibility with the linework tool, ie getting the element to show. But I have discovered a bug. The elements I have altered with the linework tool are now showing in front of elements that are in front of them, ie columns walls that are in front of windows & doors.
    Whats the deal with this?

    Hi Redmonki,

First thing to check. Are you sure that the view settings are set to hidden line and not wire frame?

If so, it might be worth posting an image of the problem to give greater clarity to the question.

View setting definitely hidden. Its something to do with using the linework tool on elements in a phased setting. Seems like bug to me.

The default phase over-rides are set to solid linework

I am guessing this is the problem, I really dont see why this is set as default, so its the first thing I change in my template

Are the vents in a different phase to the columns?
Are you trying to see the portion of vents obscured by the column as dashed?
I can't see why you need to overide with linework, can you uploade the project?

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

I'm sorry but to me it sounds like you are describing the correct behaviour of the linework tool: when you override visibility with linework it will automatically show through all elements blocking the view. As far as I know, this is default behaviour.

But, what I don't understand is why you need the Linework in the first place. My guess is that you should be looking and the Phase Filters, since they control the way elements are shown that are in different Phases. Could you explain more about the way you want to see them and post a picture of your Phase Settings?

As far as I know the filters are correct. I find that some objects dont show through walls properly. New windows in an existing wall should show. I've had to create masking regions on windows to get them to show correctly in wall under a phase situation. I've found by accident that the linework tool can turn on an element showing it through a wall.
I didn't know the line work tool will bring that line work in front of all other objects. Whats the purpose of that?

Have you set the phase filter in the View Properties box to "Show Complete" ( OOTB settings) your "Construst Print ?" If you have it set as "Show All" you get the problem you are describing.
With "Show All" set in Phase filter I can reproduce what you describe where new windows do not show then use linework to expose them which brings lines to front, but if you set to "Show Complete" there is no issues or work arounds.

if you can post the project (if not to large) with any of your issues it makes it a lot quicker to solve the problems rather than guessing and asking lots of questions.

Well, Linework is a tool that overrides the default line with a detail line. Since you select a complete line (or element using tab), well it shows it all. That's why you're betting off with spending some time fiddling around in the Phase Properties then using Linework or similar Overrides...
