    Roof cuts in project phases

I have a roof in the existing phase. When I put window in from the new construction phase, the opening cut from the windows shows up in the existing phase - although the windows themselves don't. The same is true for by face opening cuts that I have put in the roof for a new roof opening.

Is there a way to prevent these cuts from showing in the existing phase, or should I demolish the existing roof, and create a new one (with windows/openings etc) in the new construction phase?

What are your phase filters set to?

Your existing phase drawings should be set to "show new" or "show all" or "show complete" (I'm not really sure what the difference is for an existing phase.)

edit - are you using the opening tool or a family with an opening / void? the openings (wall, vertical, face, dormer) are not phase aware... :banghead:

A longstanding problem in Revit as far as I know (but I may have missed something) and I just do what you suggest - in a new construction phase view I select the roof (or sometimes walls) copy to clipboard, demolish with the 'hammer' tool and then paste to the same location to create a new construction phase copy.

You can get in a tangle with this approach however if walls are attached to that original roof and you start changing them, but it is the approach I've used since starting with Revit when there are complex alterations to an existing building.

My phase filters are set to "Show Complete" in both phases. I'm using opening tools for the dormers and openings/voids in families for the windows.

Openings get associated with the phase of the element they cut. Better to use a face based or hosted family to cut the hole you need instead. That will respect the phase and phase filter settings. Attached image is a face based family, cutting the roof.

Thanks Steve, I hadn't realised that.

The problem I find is altering roof shapes between phases - say, adding a dormer which will involve cutting out a hole in the roof using the dormer tool - which leaves a hole in the existing phase view of the roof as well as the new construction view... or is there a way round that?

Then we're where you described the process you use.

                Ah right - thanks.

I get in such a rut doing things a certain way in Revit that I wonder sometimes if I'm missing something

                  Hi,

If anyone is still looking for a solution, you can make a roof cut into an existing roof using Component>Model in Place. Create a void extrusion and make to required cut in the new construction phase apply the cut and done.

this should keep you existing roof in tact and show a cut in the new construction phase.

                  Hope this is of assistance.
