    Exploding Families!

Here's a cool tutorial on how to model geometry when multiple geometry sits on top of each other: http://ibdrg.typepad.com/ibd-resourc...-creation.html

This blog is definately in my rss-feed. Wouldn't use it on any actual project family but it looks really cool!

Thanks for the follow. Its definitely not a technique you will use in everyday family creation and is more suited for a content provider like us that tries to create MEP assemblies of products in a single family. Now that we are seeing assemblies in system families on the arch & struct side of Revit in 2012 I hope this functionality makes it way over to the MEP side. We could really make great use of being able to set rules for custom content that the engineer can select his options from..... just think of all the great possibilities. Custom AHU's... Switchgear...Data enclosures etc.

This type of thing is something i have been dreaming of for a while, like you say, with assembly views now being a feature it doesn't seem too far off

Good initiative with the family example though, it is something I have considered when building content, but very tempting to overmodel internals with that sort of functionality as well

Thanks! Your right about over modelling, I am always on my guys about file size, we literally will change our families to save 10-20 kb in file size. The revit file structure is not always intuitive either as to what will add to the file size and what wont. We have alot of in house documentation on this from our test cases.... speaking of this might be a good topic for a blog post.... to the blog!
