Do you copy and paste the doors and windows from the arch’ model

    Hi,

When you work with an architect that use Revit how do you deal with windows and door openings?

At the moment I see 2 workflow – see below - but was hoping to get some other thoughts or comments
    - copy the arch’s doors and windows and hide them in our elevations and the draw the ’symbolic’ opening cross in with details lines (or use a DC). This would be OK for windows but it would generally not work for doors when we do precast panels.
    - copy the arch’s doors and windows and then replace them our door and window families that are ‘empty’ families but have the ‘cross’ in them to show the opening. This is how we currently work.

    Thanks,
    johk

I can promise that the architects prefer your current method. If you switch to your other solution the architects will be forced to hide them whenever they link your model in to theirs.

No. I don't copy in doors and windows.
I'll make elevation views of the walls and make sure the architect's doors and windows are showing. Then I "Edit Profile" to make the cuts in my walls.
Others will have different methods and have their reasons for doing so. This is just how I do it here.

Why edit profile rather than a family with nothing but an opening?

why add yet another family to the project?

Because I've seen edit profile edges jump to make wall cleanup - at least in RAC. Do others not get that problem? I've never quite worked out why it happens but it happened at lot on one project I had where I wanted to use edit profile to cut out big openings in a concrete wall for niches.'

Now I would just use a face based family with a void extrusion if I don't want room separation (opinions welcome), or an empty door template if I do want a room separation.

My doors (architects) have the opening cross that shows up in course view....So our structural will see the cross and not frame and glass in their views...

Just a thought - Why not replace the doors and windows in the Arch's model with your blank/cross families BEFORE linking it into your model? Then not only would it look right, but you wouldn't have extra families in your model...

I offer a variant of the family solution, to our consultants:

I tell them to Copy / Paste Aligned, our Door/Window/Opening content, but then i go through with them to create a version of our families that have no geometry. Why? We use Nested Panels and Nested Frames, and that means if they swap our "Door-Single" family out for their own, the opening sizes may very well be different. But if- at the beginning of a project- I send them "F22Struct" which is a blank version of F22, then they can keep Door-Single with F22struct, and it will behave exactly as mine does.

                  Everyones mileage varies.

                    Thanks for the inputs,

The preferred method would be if I could use the architects windows and when I switch to structural discipline all I will see is the opening in the wall (the family could have the ‘cross’ drawn in a subcategory to control visibility).
At the moment I can’t even turn the louver blades or frames etc of via VG as the different elements are not in different sub-categories.
I wonder why the window frame etc do show up in a structural view – I can’t remember last time I had to show it? Maybe the glazing + frame etc should not be visible by default in a structural view?

For doors though I think I am stuck with replacing the Arch’s doors with my empty door family. The reason being that when the architect show his doors - the btm of the door is generally flush with top of slab. But for example when we do precast ‘sheds’ the door opening go below slab.
