[API-Related] Is it possible to connect HVAC zones and Mechanical Equipment?

So I was thinking about this on my drive home tonight. I want to be able to link the name of an HVAC Zone (I.e a group of Spaces) to the Mark of a designated piece of Mechanical Equipment. Specifically, I want the Zone to be named "VAV-1-1", and automatically update if I change the name of the VAV. This would allow me to automate the ASHRAE 62.1 Ventilation Rate Procedure, which is downright laborious. The whole point is to be able to list the total area served by each VAV in an HVAC Zone Schedule.

is such a thing possible through the API?

possible through API for sure, even easy w/ Dynamo

    Thanks!

You know that feeling when you're excited, but don't really understand what you're excited about? I'm having that feeling. I had no idea that Dynamo was free!

I'm excited too. This gives me a reason to actually open Dynamo now....

I think this might be the thing that gets me motivated to learn a programming language other than AutoLISP!

    Hi Ning,
This could be a good way around for couple of zones and VAV boxes. but what if we have bunch of them? How can we generalize this process? Do you know any link between HVAC Zones and VAV equipment?

One thing I dont like about Zones is that a space can only belong to one zone.
What if you want to group spaces for Ventilation groups AND Heating groups AND Fire compartment AND Security zoning AND etc... which may have a totally different grouping.
So if you are going to use Dynamo anyway you may as well work with parameters in the spaces for the different zones instead.
Zones are mainly useful because they are more intuitive for the user but you can do disappointingly little with them.

But Yes, if a piece of equipment is in a space you can check that with Dynamo, get the zoning info from the space and then write it into the equipment, or vice versa.
This is usually done by checking the origin coordinate of the family is withing the volume of the space, so works for any family rather than just the ones that have the Room/Space:Number/Name parameters.

Another method that is useful is to sketch large scale zones with Area Plans (You can have many types, for different disciplines) and then write the info from the areas into all the spaces that are inside them.

    Hi Joseph,

yes I agree with you on finding an equipment in space is possible with family origin. Is there any way to find the zone(not zone name, zone element) associated to equipment? Because I think revit doesn't consider zones as geometry. So how to do that?

From the Zone parameter in the space?

No , That's not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a way to get zone"element" associated with space, meaning, I don't want to know just name of that zone but would like to access all other parameters of that zone.
