Question Can't Edit a Nested Family without the Original file that was nested.

I have a fan unit family (file B) that was created originally as a different file (file A) and nested into File B. File A is now no longer available.

I would now like to edit the family but the 'Edit Family' button does absolutely nothing and I cant get back to the file that was nested. Is this because the original file A is no longer available?

Is there any way to edit File A again? I thought you would just be able to edit the nested elements.... no?

Sounds more like it was an inserted DWG....it's the only time the "Edit Family" button won't work.

    Could you post the family?

You should be able to open the host family and then right click on the nested family to edit. The nested family isn't externally referenced so it shouldn't make a difference that it is no longer available.

It's definitely not an inserted dwg. I made it myself using standard family creation methods i.e. extrusions, revolves etc. I got rid of the saved nested family as I didn't think it was needed. Now I can't get into the model to edit it.

Actually it's a Revit 2015 file but thats not the issue.
Here's a video of the problem in case you cant open the file. Both right click--> Edit nor clicking the Edit family button does absolutely nothing.

    Okay....that is weird....

Rename the nested family in the project browser...then it will work...

    Awesome! it works!
Only works if you rename the collapsible name, not it's 'child' as in the image below...
