Angry Duplicating Materials without linking/cloning the Apperance Properties

I've got to say the material editor in Revit (albeit v2013) is absolutely terrible compared to other software I use and it has a really annoying bug/feature.

That being, When you take a stock material, change it to get it like you want it, then duplicate it to create a variant (as you want the same properties except maybe the tint colour) the tint colour on the copied version then changes the original material at the same time! Agghhh! why is this? and how do I stop it happening without having to start from scratch each time for each additional variant of the same custom material?

Help on this would be great

    Thanks guys.

    Michael

Ok I got it, right click the appearance tab on the duplicate and hit duplicate after you've already duplicated it. Stupid, stupid, stupid, system

Two things at play here, material and asset. The one asset can be used by more than one material. If you are planning on rendering, you need to duplicate the asset too. The liitle hand symbol shows you how many other materials are using that asset. The online help explains it, just press F1
