    Can't Figure out where these Visibility overrides are coming from

    The title of this post is a little misleading because I'm discovering things as I go... anyway, so I have a valve with a clearance box around it that I've created a Clearance Box material for but the Material assigned to my System Type is overriding that nice transparent material (see below). My question is, is there a way for the material in the family to override the material assigned to the system type? (I attached both the family and the project with the system type applied)

    Yes this is an issue with system materials.
    The order of the graphics overrides is;
    -materials in family
    -materials/colours in system
    -filters
    -overides in view

    But, if you connect more than one system to the family it reverts to its original materials.
    So for example if you put an extra connector on the valve, select it and click the Pipe System button to create another system it will have more than one system associated with it and go back to the original materials.
    (Yes.. another stupid work around..)

    The alternative is to make your space reservation box with thin extrusions. So they get coloured by the system but still define an empty box.

    Have you tried making your clearance a separate family nested into your valve family? That may break the direct link.

    No, system materials overide evrything. I use nested families a lot and it makes no difference in this case.
    Maybe you could try modelling a cube with just model lines, so it is actually empty space. (Although it wont show up in clash detection, if thats what you want)

    Ahhh...pesky system materials....gotcha. We go without them so I hadn't seen this manifest itself. So another "workaround" would be to set the system material to <By Category> and set a filter in the view with a colored solid pattern.

    Yes, that was the workaround that I was going with for a minute but you see, we use those color overrides on the material of the Pipe Systems so that those colors automatically/easily roll over to Navis and Glue. But with everyone's input I found the solution I was looking for...as long as you nest the clearance box inside of the valve family AND you share the family parameters (inside the clearance box family, under Family Categories and Parameters, check the Shared box), the clearance box will take on the material you've assigned to it rather than the material assigned to the piping system. Sharing the family parameters is key though. This may have been the obvious solution to some but I'm fairly new to the program, specifically family editing, so it was an accomplishment for me haha! Thanks everyone!

    Definitely a good tip.

    Yeah. I already use the same 'clearance space' family in all my other families so that it has consistent sub-category that can be turned on/off in views. I will just make it shared too.
