Can't get Nested Family Shape Handle to show up

I'm new to family creation and I've come across an issue...I have a nested family of a clearance box inside the family of a generic valve and I am trying to make it so that I can change the length of the clearance box with a shape handle/grip... When I load the clearance box family into a project stand-alone, I can see the shape handle grip to stretch the extrusion up or down and it works fine... but if nest that family inside the valve family, the handle/grip goes away... I've linked the stretch parameters and I can enter a dimension inside the properties to manually change the length of the extrusion/clearance box that way, but no grips... maybe I am missing something in the parameter linking process, maybe it has to do with the family types, or maybe what I'm trying to achieve isn't even possible... any input? (I've attached both families)

The grips associated with a nested family won't show up in the project as part of its host family. You have to build the same reference planes and parameter bones and muscle in the host family. Then you align and lock the grips of the nested family to the host family's bones.

I got around the problem by just drawing the clearance zone directly into the valve family, not a real answer to my question but a solution to the problem none the less!

By the way, this was the solution I went with, it made much more sense with the particular family I was working with... thanks for the reply!
