System Seperators - Mechanical Equipment -vs- Pipe Accessory

Is the pipe accessory category a reliable choice for this, or is mechanical equipment the way to go?

You mean with two different connector types so you can connect, for example, heating supply with heating return?
I would use a pipe accessory because it is easy to place it in a pipe (I made one that is a regulating valve). For air duct systems Mech Eq is probably better, a fan box or recirculation valve in an AHU for example.

Yes I mean with two different connector types. But I was thinking more along the lines of connecting supply A to supply B, if that makes any difference.

I think I know what you mean in terms of the relationship between systems. I'm assuming you're looking at something like pipework from two or more pumps returning to a common header or similar. In this case a motorized control valve (or regulating valve) wouldn't seem necessary. Perhaps just a regular old isolation valve or equivalent would do the trick, you could just modify the current valve family you'd use to separate the systems. I used a motorized valve to separate my supply and return systems on chilled water project recently and never had a second thought.

I've not separated a supply network into 2 or more systems before so I could be completely off the mark. However the answer to your initial question was answered very well by Joseph: Ductwork = Mech. Eq. & Pipework = Pipe Acc.
