    Future Phase Issue

We have a new building that we expect to have a future expansion. When the engineer designed the building in RAM, he designed the entire building, with future expansion included.

When I brought it into Revit, I created a new phase, Future Expansion; it's placement is after New Construction. I then took all the steel and foundations that we expect to be in the future expansion and changed it's Phase to Future Expansion.

Everything was going smoothly until I tried to place a wall footing (for current, New Construction phase) in an area where there are two future column footings.

I'm not seeing the full length of my wall footing. It seems to be clipped by the Future Expansion columnn footings.

Anybody have any ideas on how to solve this?

Its a bug really, Phasing and joining doesnt quite work

In reality an element that is in a different phase should not join (and cut) an element in the current phase, that goes for elements in Previous phases as well, but particularly for elements in future phases IMO

There are a couple of ways around it,

You can manually just unjoin when modelling, this can be tedious

Or another workflow is to put the future elements onto a design option as a secondary option which will mean elements wont join to it

Finally, If the future elements are a bit more complicated, the other option I would look at is a separate model for the future stage

Also it is worth logging a Autodesk support request about this outlining the problem this causes your workflows as well

Ah! Excellent! the Unjoin Geometry worked! Thanks!!!
I think I will log a request... There are going to be others with the same issue. And in my research on this one, I've found that we need more flexibility in visibility of Future phases.

I have also created a future phase and now wish to create a phase filter for future works which will show as greyed out in the current new construction phase (thats a mouthful).
I guess the real question is.. how do i create an additional phase status for future works so i can override the graphics accordingly??

You use two views, overlayed on the sheet.

View 1: Phase 1, Show Previous and New, Previous set to overridden, New set to By Category.
View 2: Phase 2 (future), Show New only, New set to Overriden (Grayed, dashed).

You then have to pay attention to draw order (order placed on sheet is only way to control it), and you have to make sure the view on TOP doesnt have the floors in it, or set floors to off or transparent, or you wont see the VP below. Room tags have to be in the Current Phase Floor Plan, unless youve got rooms in the future phase too.

            Thanks it works well...
now to duplicate 30 wall elevations...!

Make a new elevation Type, call it Future Elevations. Then you can filter the Plan Markers out in the view templates. Otherwise, the elevation markers are sitting on top of one another since its technically two views.
