    Cable Tray Clearance Space

    What's the best way to place clearance for cable tray? I wish cable tray had an option similar to piping insulation except it added clearance space. From what I looked up it doesn't appear that I can just add it into the cable tray families. Seems like an over-site to me. When has someone needed to model a cable tray and not the access space, at least as a contractor.

    The only thing I can think of is making a family with instanced parameters so we can stretch it as needed to fit the cable tray. I don't think I want it to be hosted by the cable tray. I'll just use the offset to get it at the right elevation and then use align to get it in the right spot before stretching the ends. It should work well in cases where the corners don't have a radius. Not sure how I will handle radius fittings.

    I made the family but it is showing up as a underlay when I insert it. I can't figure out why this is happening.

    It is because it is a generic model and view's discipline was set to Electrical. If I change it to equipement it is no longer an underlay, but now it has the equipment visibility overrides on it.

    Maybe get a Cable tray Union (Which can be placed into cable trays with Split and is filtered as a Cable Tray Fitting) and put clearance into it. If you make a couple of Strong ref planes you can stretch or Align it to the length of the cable tray run it is placed in.

      I hate to be a smart alec, but have you tried using a duct family? Create a system type called "Cable Tray" and go to town.

        Another option is to use an In-Place Family. Just pick a reference (bottom of cable tray, for instance) and use simple extrusions by selecting the Cable Tray with the Pick tool (I wonder if Shift+Select would work?) and using offsets and trim to connect them. It'd be very easy, especially if you temporarily isolate the Cable Tray and Fittings categories.

        Exactly what In-Place components are meant for IMHO.

        I just tried it with absolute ease. You can isolate the Cable Tray categories in both a Plan and 3D View, start an In-Place Model, set the view to Coarse to make the Cable Tray single-line which you can then Shift+Select the entire run and offset the distance necessary on both sides. Add the correct Extrusion values for negative and positive Z, apply a Clearance material with semi-transparency and set a Sub-Category for it - done and done.

            I tried following these instructions, but I'm missing a key step or two - or perhaps just don't have enough experience with In-Place components since I was taught early on to never use them.

            1. I was able to sketch out the overall shape of the extrusion, but its defaulting to hosting to the floor - I'm not sure how to elevate it.
            2. The second thing is I'm not sure what you were achieving with "Shift+Select" - I'm wondering what I'm missing out with that as holding shift when using the select tool doesn't appear to do anything for me.
            3. Would your solution be able to take into account elevation changes of the cable tray?
