Has anyone managed to make the "Explode" command work? I want to import dwg blocks, or SAT files ( to use for family creation) but I ALWAYS get the message that it can't be exploded, only 2d data will be exploded...
Doesn't matter if I want partial or full exploding...
This command is completely broken...!
Revit Architecture - 3ds MAX Design - Octane Render - and many working hours...
You shouldn't do this at all. Even if it does explode this means that all linetypes are added to your project / family, object styles are added, materials are added. It takes more time to clean this mess up then redrawing the linked block in the first place.
Can't say I have ever had a problem with "explode" it works just fine.
I have had a "problem" with the mess it makes after it has "worked just fine".
Do your self a favour link the file if you have to but don't use "explode".

It is not broken; it's just that it has a rule: if your import or link has more than 10,000 entities, it will not explode. Perhaps is some kind of self protection, to avoid having more than 10,000 problems later.
Generally "Import" in Revit is different than other apps... all imported objects are practically useless... For example, if I import a 3ds or obj file in MAX then I can scale it, edit materials, assign materials, change/move vertices etc...
In Revit you import dead dwg files and they remain dead...
I send you a really simple sat file exported from Moi3d, a great Rhino-like NURBS app... Since I don't like mass and form modeling in Revit very much, I want to make some tests using SAT imported into masses and work with them to apply walls, floors, roofs etc...
It would be very nice for some families too...
This is a really small file...
Nerver ever, ever never ever, never never ever ever!!!! Explode!!! Doing so WILL cause your project to have corruption problems period. We take employees out back and break their finger if they do this in a project, then explode them.

LOL!
My first project I did, I imported some cad drawings and exploded them and then forgot about them. I had to later in the project add some line styles and realized that there were dozens of line and text styles all with names that don't relate to what they are. So i took myself out back and pulled a "Fight Club" scene on myself.

I can't think of many good reasons to even use the import command instead of linking. If you explode, you may not even get everything. Some elements in CAD files are too small for Revit to even recognize.

The only problem with the "Explode" button is that it shouldnt even be in the program.
This is the correct answer I think... Even if you don't think it is broken, it is useless...
But I think that importing translated to "place a model inside Revit and use, manipulate or transform it's parts" is not happening...
There is no importing like in other apps.... it could be "placing" a dwg... to show the difference.

Actually you are probably right... I would like someone to give us an idea why would anyone miss import, which is "placing" anyway...
if they took away this option...

So I am trying to import a 3D AutoCAD file into Revit. I have searched for how to do this and have found methods that most people recommend. Which is...
I understand that we should not import and explode Autocad drawings in Revit. My question is: is the linework created by Revit from an exploded Autocad...
Was wondering if anyone here have experience with a Revit > Blender workflow?
