Custom families - Importing CAD (3DM/SAT files) - Materials

I've downloaded some manufacturer's RFA files for sanitaryware (as specified in the clients bathroom spec) but I soon found they were either faceted DWG imports or entirely modelled in Revit but of a shocking standard (non-symmetrical, overlapping edges etc..). I've started playing with Moment of Inspiration (Moi3D) as solution to making lightweight but good quality sanitaryware families. Its a great piece of software and I managed to mock up a concealed-cistern toilet pretty quickly from DWG views of the Plan/Front/Side. I then created a Generic Model, imported the file (using ACIS SAT) and found the object is entirely black. Changing the Generic Model material in object styles doesn't change the objects colour. I then tried using 3DM and found its a dark grey colour. Changing the OS material again has no effect. I did find that if I preassign the material to the GM catergory, the material does get applied. Is there something I'm missing? Can I also assign the imported mass to a custom object style (to avoid changing the material of all generic models in a project)?

Imported objects handle all of their materials By later, in the Imported Objects Object Styles.

    AND they perform horribly.

      Hey Aaron,

I don't get anything listed in the imported objects within object styles, its entirely empty.

If I load the family into a project and change the top level material for generic models, then the material changes just fine but I want avoid this category-wide assignment of a material to all GM.

I've uploaded the model in its native 3dm format if anyone wants to test it out (had to put it in a zip file as the upload wont accept .3dm). Its still missing some fillets and a toilet seat but the geometry is extremely lean.

Horribly in what way? All I hope for this and any other family created outwith the family editor is to just sit there and look pretty in a 3D view. If they can do that I'm happy as I will still use masked detail components for plan and elevation views.

Hey, if your happy with it, awesome. Imported geometry is known to cause more fatal errors, more "error drawing the contents of this window," and more bizarre problems in general. I've seen a Revit model just refuse to print a furniture plan, over manufacturers stuff with imported geometry. :shrugs:

Honestly, there's also nothing in that toilet that couldn't be modeled in Revit in ten minutes.

But, back to the topic at hand: maybe 3dm stuff behaves differently than DWG, WRT materials and object styles. Even by later isn't really sustainable, to me.

Sent from my Phablet. Please excuse typos... and bad ideas.

I don't see any way of assigning material.
The most I could do is change your display with filters

Trust us! You're better off severed by taking the 10mins to rebuild the content. Good news is you could use the edged of the Imports as reference to build from or the copy over in a brand spanking new family from template for the sketching. Just verify the accuracy (angles/lengths) once you get rid of the imported geometry.

to apply material parameter to Imported .SAT geometry,.. you will need to do the following:

              Revit 2016
              import your .SAT file
              Scale to suite
              Explode the .SAT file
Select it (it's now native revit geometry)
              Apply material Parameter

to apply another material,... create a material parameter, and assign a material to it
then use the paint tool, and paint on your material parameter to surfaces you wish to have different material on.

PS: the exploding of .SAT files only work with certain .SAT files
(this workflow is no longer available for revit 2017.2 upwards)

Yeah, thats a terrible workflow. I dont advise that.
