Is there is a relatively easy (i.e. fast) way to turn a door family into a curtain wall door family? I made a bunch of doors similar to Aaron's with all the nested families, shared parameters and time spent. If possible I'd rather not have to make a new door family from the frame inward

Children families as in shared nested leaves and frames, I think.

FWIW I use the same nested shared panels and hardware. If your frames do the actual wall cutting (and have wall frame profiles modeled accurately) they won't be the same for cw, so you'll need different frames.

I took my doors to v.34 last weekend (!) and have yet to fully implement an approach that caters for both, but I've had planned for another time. With the intent that the frame wouldn't cut, (being more like the panel) - where I'd have a cutting child for basics. I push-down so many parameters from the parent, that it'd just be connecting the two child.
Tail wags dog? Almost certainly.

It wont work, worth a damn.
Not if you have complex shaped frames that arent simple rectangles. (Partial sidelights, partial transoms, etc). Because its not information "pushing" from the Parent family down to the frame: Its the frames selection making that distinction. Unless you want to end up with a redundant "Cutter selector," which (imvho) would suck.
