    Nested family and rotation

    Hi all,
    I need your thoughts and advices: I want to rotate a generic model family nested into another one, centered at the same place.
    simple,not?
    What I did is placing the GM 0 center to center with the host, GM 1, then put a parameter with angle dimension.
    that works some times, some times not. or works in the family, not in the project. or works fine until you put angle value to 0, then rotation go crazy.

    I have famillies with no problem; and some that can't work. The most succes I have is when the angled dim is placed on ref planes with a 0 angle; but It doesn't work with all ref. planes.

    How would you do this?

    What does the nested GM look like ? Would be really easy if it could be made as an extruded profile

    If it´s made of more advances geometry, you typically need two ref. lines starting at the center, and 90deg to each other... Open the doors in the download section, and see how I did the rotation of the leafs.

        Ok, done. You need 2 ref. lines at 90°, lock your nested family to both, and assign 3 times the angle parameter:
        2 times for ref. lines AND 1 for the nested family. don't forget that, otherwise it doesn't work. result attached.

          Is it possible to achieve this inside the nest itself? I have it set up but not sure how to lock the odd-shaped extrusion to the ref lines.

            If you want to rotate an object like this then you should nest it and try the rotation in the host family. When you try to rotate an extrusion in its own file, only some edges of the object rotate, deforming the object.

              I am missing something with the procedure to align the nest to the ref lines:
              1. I align the endpoint of ref line1 to the nested vertical plane and lock.
              2. I align the endpoint of ref line1 to the nested horiz plane and lock.
              3. I repeat above for ref line2.

              I also tried setting the rotation angle to 45 degrees first and then aligning the nested vertical plane to the angled ref line (repeating for nested horiz plane to the other ref line) and this also is not working as intended. I have that funny feeling that the answer is right in front of me but I cant put my finger on it.

                  Apart from the technique shown by Munkholm and Julien above, using two reference lines constrained by a 90 degree angle, there is yet this other alternative for making a nested object rotate by a parameter in a host family: See illustration. Create the object in a face based family, making the extrusion from the front elevation. Then load it into the floor plan view of the host family where you have set up a reference line with an angular parameter. Place the nested object using the "Place on vertical face" option. Select the reference line. You don't even need to lock the object to the line. Now move the object along the line to the center of rotation. Now constraint the object from the front elevation. Done.

                    If your family is setup appropriately, nesting it into another family and simply adding an angular dimension works fine. However, you must make sure that your angular dimension parameter dimensions between the reference planes and the origin of the nested family. If you don't constrain to the origin it will break.

                    Tested and works fine 100% of the time here. I used a similar technique for the crane I did some time ago.
