I had some things deleted in a project so I did a save as of a back up. I have gone in and grouped the model elements and grouped the detail elements associated with the model elements and then referred the groups to each other. Now how do I get the model group and attached detail groups from the back-up file into the original file?

Groups with Multiple Detail Groups

Copy the group to clipboard in the project browser. Open new project - paste to browser.Ian Kidston

OK - slightly misunderstood the problem.
As far as I am aware, when one creates a group which includes both model elements and detail elements, the detail group are linked to the model group, but this combined, linked, group cannot be transfered as a complete package. As I see it, the only way around is to copy and paste both the model and detail groups separately and recombine in the new project.Ian Kidston

I just tried it and it works, as Ian said, you have to copy the model group from the project browser
Switch to your new project, and choose paste>Paste from clipboard, this will simply copy the group into the project and wont create any instances of the group
You should now see the model group with the attached detail groups in the project browser
The only catch is you cannot copy a group instance from the old backup, it will simply add a number to the end of the group name. The best you can do here is allow the additional group type, then switch the type to the one with the attached detail groups. But depending how your group has been created, you may get elements dropping out of the group or joins breaking, in the test I did some items just didnt like this workflow

OK, so this morning I am getting it to work better than I did last night. However, I am just doing some trials of this and it is still not working idealy. I have a group of structural rebar (model group) then I have a plan and two section (giving me three detail groups). In each of these I have tagged the bars and have a dimension and some lines. I group the detail items in each view together and attach them to the model group. I go to the model group-right click-copy to clip board. I then go in to a clean project and go modify-paste-paste from clipboard...only two of the three model groups come through.
I am not sure if it is prudent or not, but one of the two sections is the one that did not come through. I also tried to save the group then load as group in the new project and then only one of the detail groups came in then.

ok, Aaron is right (off course) but maybe somewhat short on explanation:
1. Go to the original file, go to plan view, select the group AND the section markers of the views in which you created the detail groups.
2. Go to the new file and the view you want to place the group in, Modify > Paste > Paste Aligned to current view
3. Select the Model Group and click Attached Detail Groups. Only the DG which you made in this view will show. Select and place.
4. Go to the other views you copied, and repeat the above step.
This is important because Attached Detail Groups are, like all annotations, view specific! My guess is that this is where it went wrong.Martijn de Riet
