linked building interior elevations part one: initial difficulties

I have a project comprised of a site file with a linked building file. It seems like the best place to create construction documents for the building remodel is in the site file. If there were two buildings, it seems like the only way to do the construction documents.

However, I'm having a bit of trouble creating interior elevations of the building link's rooms: namely, Revit won't let me. I tricked Revit into creating the elevations by temporarily recreating the walls, floors, and ceilings in the site file (very un-bimmy and a real bummer). Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Sorry to be vague. Being new to Revit, I have trouble finding the words to correctly ask questions.

When I try to place the elevation tag it ignores the linked building's walls. I've using a curtain wall as a fence next to the building and the tag points to it. But the tag only points to the left while in the room, not rotating as I moved it around the room to near the other walls. When I place the tag after it ignores the rooms and open the view, it's extents are from sea level (the bottom level in the site) to well beyond the toposurface which is about 200' above sea level, and more than a 100 feet across the site. I don't have much experience with interior elevations, but don't they crop to near the room's extents by default? Maybe I've messed up my elevation tags and am placing an exterior elevation, but I don't know how to confirm this.

Any advice, given this information?

Revit won't "see" the walls in the linked model. YOu would typically want to do interior elevations in the Building model, not the site model. The problem comes if you are the Interior designer and need to elevate an architects model. You can either copy/monitor the walls(difficult). Or just add some temp walls, make the elevation, then delete the temp wall.

Scott: I did add temporary walls, floors and ceilings, thinking the whole time this can't be the right way. What if I had a hundred rooms to elevate?

If I were to create the elevations in the building model, how do I put those views into the construction documents created in the site model?

You can also copy and paste the elevation markers, if you have the views opened in both models at the same time...

EDIT: You dont put them in one model, and document them in another. At least, you can NOTE them in one model and show the NOTES in another, but you arent getting around needing the actual elevations in the model your drawings are in.

Can you open both models at the same time? I've done it by running two Revit sessions but don't think I can copy and paste between the sessions. I believe if the models are linked, I can't open one without unloading it in the other, and being new, am a little afraid to do this. Is this fear unfounded?

I started by creating the elevations in the building model before realizing I need them in the site model's construction documents. Perhaps a dumb question and maybe answered once I know how to copy and paste the elevation markers, but by copy and pasting the elevation markers, will the cropped extents of and any notes in those views be transferred to the site model?

Aaron: So I opened the building (forcing an unloading in the site), then copy and "paste - aligned to current view" the elevation marker for one room in the site. Questions:

1. Although new elevation views were created in the site, I can't find the elevation markers in the plan view. I right-clicked on the view in the project browser, selected "find referring views" (although I'm not sure what that means), and was informed "could not find referring object."

2. After reloading the building in the site, the new elevations in the site are empty. There isn't even any site information in the view after uncropping and revealing hidden elements. Did I do something wrong?

My guess is theyre at a drastically different elevation.Depending on how your coordinates are set up, you might have to move them vertically. Then again, depending on how your coordinates are set up, they might not also be in the right spot at all. :-/

The building and site have shared coordinates. Shouldn't that resolve any issue of pasting "aligned to the current view"?

For fun, I opened on offending elevation view, revealed hidden items and zoomed to fit, and turned on the crop region. I don't see the crop region, although if I cross the entire window I can select it. Then I drew a detail line across the screen, and it is 76,000' long. I think something is wrong. I deleted the elevation from the project browser.

I'd like to try to copy / paste the elevation marker again. It seems like paste aligned to current view is the best way to do this, but it didn't work the first time. What's the correct way to copy and paste the elevation marker from model to model, given that the models' coordinates are shared?
