I thought it might be nice to have a list of view filters ideas / good filters to have, especially for those of us that are still at the lower end of the learning curve. I see a lot of reference to 'just create a filter' but I don't always remember when I need one.
I started a Google Docs Spreadsheet rather than try to maintain a list - anyone with the link can edit.
I have twenty or so that are prepopulated in every view in our template, and every default view template thats used when a view is created. I dont remember all of themm but:
Could anyone provide a brief description of when and how you use filters? I have started to create view templates in the office and have seen view filters, but do not have a conceptual understanding of them. Thanks,
View filters work the same way as your standard VG overrides except you have a much higher degree of control based on the filter options. You can filter by most parameters in a family or category. A very common usage is to delineate between a 1HR fire wall and a regular wall. When you create your filter you select the parameter in the filter by selection and assign a value. Then apply your override definitions and the 1HR walls will take them on. The list was started when I was working on templates and had no idea how or where to apply them. Our template has 20 or so built in filters at the moment and I know the more I work the more I'll end up adding.
Chad, you are talking Architecture here, aren't you?
I know Mechanical likes to use Filters to show their different Systems in colors (Supply Air vs Return Air for example)
We've got a Project Parameter that is applies as just about every Category called NIC.
Then we filter on NIC to turn those items (typically Furniture and Equipment) dashed.

I used architecture because it's what I'm familiar with but the principle applies to anything that can be filtered. I like the NIC filter. I'm adding one!
Pash - once you figure them out they become one of the most useful tools you have. There was an AU presentation that went into filters some, let me see if I can find it.
