    Civil 3D, ADSK and Revit

    Wasn't quite sure where to post this, since there is no "Revit Site" forum. ( LOL ).

    We are working with a Civil eng. who is using Autodesk Civil 3D. I have a vague understanding that there has been a fairly recent development
    by Autodesk who has introduced a new ADSK file format.

    I know that the ADSK file format can work with Inventor; but I also thought it was developed to allow Civil 3D files to work better with Revit.

    If anyone knows more about this and can shed some light on it, it would be most appreciated.

    Here is a Skill Builder Series that was put together showing this workflow when the ADSK file was first produced. It is pretty basic infomration. Get the survey point positioned correctly. Place any Revit connectors for your building. Usually utility tie in positions. Then export file to ADSK. Civil 3d will be able to read this file and the Civil engineer will have the connectors on your building where they can tie in the utility connections. Unfortunatly the trip back is not so clean. You will have to impot their DWG file an re-create the toposurface.

      Thanks Jeff. Will have to take a look at "connectors".
      Yes--we have seen those basic videos. We are looking for a bit more in depth info.

      1. Site Utilities from C3D into Revit? ( below and above ground . ) Will 3D pipes, conduit, catch basins, etc. come into Revit?
      2. 3D roads, drives, curbs, walks, flatwork, etc from C3D into Revit? Will these convert to a toposurface well, and can different Materials be applied to them in Revit; such as 3D conc. curbs?

        No, these will not come into Revit. You get back a basic DWG file. What ever you can/want to bring in via DWG is what you are going to get. The ADSK to Civil 3d is a one way street (no pun intended). What you get back is a DWG file. The "connectors" that are transferred via the ADSK file just give the Civil Engineer a place to connect their systems to. I am not sure what the workflow is in Civil 3d. I just know this gives them a spot to connect their stuff. Say for example you have roof drains that connect in your building to a storm sewer utility. The Civil engineer can use this connector to attach into their storm sewer system and give them the correct calculations (as far as i understand it.)

        No, these elements will NOT come into Revit. You are basically getting back a contour model you can use to create a toposurface from. If these elements are contoured and create points you will get the profile of them MAYBE, but Revit has some issues when generating toposurface with a lot of points and when they are close together. You will still have to go in an create sub regions manuallly or split the surfaces and aply materials to the regions or split surfaces to get what you probably want. You for sure are not going to see these differnt things (roads, curbs, walks, etc...) as their own geometry. At best they are going to be part of the toposurface.
