Creating wall-from-face, wall appears as if masses weren't joined

I created an in-place mass where I joined 3 masses. I want to create walls-by-face in order to schedule this object, but when I attempt it, revit creates walls based on the masses BEFORE they were joined. Is this by design? I think it's obvious what I'm trying to do - can anyone recommend a different strategy?

Well, here's a new discovery. Tried creating the top bit as its own mass-in-place, then creating a wall-by-face. Seems walls NEED flat bottoms. Great.

Building an in-place component as a wall void helped me trim the bottom of my wall. This has been a long and frustrating process, just to turn a face from my Mass into something schedule-able.

I just created a mass with a non-flat bottom, then created walls from the side faces of the mass. The created walls automatically had their profiles edited to match the shape of the mass, which in my case has a sloping lower edge.
